A Tragic Transformation Only 12 Months Has Brought in the US

Twelve months back, the environment was completely different. Ahead of the American presidential vote, reflective citizens could admit the nation's significant faults – its unfairness and inequality – yet they could still perceive it as the United States. A democratic nation. A land where constitutional order held significance. A country led by a respectable and decent leader, even with his older age and increasing frailty.

Nowadays, in late October 2025, numerous citizens barely recognize the nation we reside in. Individuals believed to be unauthorized foreigners are rounded up and pushed into transport, sometimes denied due process. The eastern section of the “people’s house” – is being destroyed to build a lavish ballroom. Donald Trump is persecuting his political rivals or alleged foes and demanding legal authorities hand over an enormous amount of public funds. Uniformed troops are deployed across metropolitan centers with deceptive justifications. The defense headquarters, rebranded the Defense Ministry, has – in effect – rid itself of routine media oversight during its expenditure of possibly reaching almost one trillion dollars in public funds. Colleges, law firms, news companies are yielding from leader's menaces, and rich magnates are treated like nobility.

“The US, only a few months ahead of its 250th birthday as the world’s leading democracy, has tipped over the limit into authoritarianism and extremism,” Garrett Graff, stated recently. “In the end, more quickly than I thought feasible, it did happen here.”

Every morning starts to new horrors. It is difficult to grasp – and painful to realize – how severely declined we are, and how quickly it has happened.

Nevertheless, we know that the leader was legitimately chosen. Even after his profoundly alarming initial presidency and even after the warnings that came with the awareness of Project 2025 – despite the leader directly declared plainly he would rule as a tyrant solely at the start – enough Americans selected him instead of the other candidate.

Frightening as today's circumstances may be, it's more daunting to understand that we are just three-quarters of a year into this administration. How will an additional three years of this deterioration find us? And what if that timeframe turns into something even longer, as there is nobody to stop this ruler from opting that a third term is essential, perhaps for defense purposes?

Certainly, all is not lost. We will have midterm elections next year that could bring a different political equilibrium, in case Democrats retake one or both houses of the legislature. We have public servants who are attempting to apply certain responsibility, like Democratic congressmen that are launching an investigation concerning the try to fund seizure from legal authorities.

And a presidential election in 2028 could start our journey to recovery precisely as last year’s election set us on this disappointing trajectory.

There are countless citizens protesting in public spaces across municipalities, as they did recently during anti-authority protests.

Robert Reich, stated lately that “the dormant powerhouse of the nation is rising”, similar to past post-McCarthyism in the 1950s or throughout the sixties activism or in the seventies crisis.

In those instances, the listing ship finally returned to balance.

He claims he understands the signals of that revival and observes it occurring currently. As support, he references the widespread marches, the widespread, bipartisan pushback regarding a television host's removal and the near-unanimous refusal by journalists to accept military mandates they solely cover authorized information.

“The dormant force perpetually exists dormant before certain corruption turns extremely harmful, an specific act so disrespectful toward public welfare, specific cruelty so noisy, that it is forced other than to stir.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I respect his knowledgeable stance. Possibly he may turn out correct.

Meanwhile, the major inquiries remain: will the nation ever recover? Can it reclaim its status internationally and its devotion to the rule of law?

Or should we recognize that the national endeavor worked for a while, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My negative thoughts suggests that the latter is accurate; that all may indeed be gone. My positive feelings, though, tells me that we have to attempt, in whatever ways possible.

For me, as an observer of the press, that’s about urging journalists to adhere, more completely, to their purpose of overseeing leadership. For others, it might involve participating in political races, or coordinating protests, or developing approaches to defend electoral access.

Under twelve months back, we existed in a very different place. Twelve months later? Or in several years? The fact is, we don’t know. The only option is to strive to not give up.
